After graduating from high school in 1957 he obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from ELTE University in 1964. During his university years he supported himself.

He obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from ELTE University, Budapest in 1964. During his university years he supported himself by leading his own jazz orchestra.








He then studied and received his MFA in Film Directing at the Hungarian Film and Television University in 1969.

After film school, Magyar wrote and directed controversial Hungarian films (Agitators, Expedition Punitive)
which were, nonetheless, recognized and won prizes at international film festivals (Cannes, Oberhausen, Locarno), and today are considered influential classics of Hungarian cinema.
