He then studied and received his MFA in Film Directing at the Hungarian Film and Television University in 1969.

After film school, Magyar wrote and directed controversial Hungarian films (Agitators, Expedition Punitive)
which were, nonetheless, recognized and won prizes at international film festivals (Cannes, Oberhausen, Locarno), and today are considered influential classics of Hungarian cinema.
